Applications and Characteristics of Chlorinated Polypropylene

Chlorinated polypropylene plays an important role in the coatings industry and is commonly used to manufacture high-performance anti-corrosion and decorative coatings. Thanks to its excellent weather resistance, chemical corrosion resistance, and adhesion properties, chlorinated polypropylene is widely employed in fields such as construction, automotive, and shipbuilding1. In addition, chlorinated polypropylene can also serve as a release agent for polypropylene injection molding and as a coating for BOPP films.

Coating industry

Ink industry
In ink production, chlorinated polypropylene serves as a key raw material that enhances the ink’s printability, abrasion resistance, and water resistance. Inks containing chlorinated polypropylene exhibit brighter colors and higher clarity during the printing process, making them highly favored in the printing industry. In particular, chlorinated polypropylene is the primary ingredient in the formulation of BOPP film composite inks.
Adhesive Industry
Chlorinated polypropylene also finds important applications in adhesive production, enabling the formulation of adhesives with exceptional properties such as strong adhesion, water resistance, oil resistance, and high-temperature resistance. These adhesives are widely used in industries including packaging, footwear manufacturing, and furniture production12. In addition, chlorinated polypropylene can serve as an adhesive for bonding BOPP films to paper, as well as a key raw material in the production of other adhesives.
The application characteristics of chlorinated polypropylene (CPP) primarily include its excellent adhesion, physicochemical properties, and wide range of applications.
Chlorinated polypropylene is a thermoplastic resin obtained by chlorinating and modifying polypropylene. It appears as a white, amorphous solid, a white or pale yellow powder, or yellow or pale yellow granules. It is non-toxic and soluble in solvents such as halogenated hydrocarbons and toluene. Depending on the chlorine content, its melting point typically ranges from 80 to 160°C, while its decomposition temperature is between 70 and 200°C. Products with low chlorine content begin to decompose slowly above 40°C, and at temperatures exceeding 70°C, the decomposition rate becomes extremely rapid.
Adhesiveness
Chlorinated polypropylene exhibits excellent adhesion to polypropylene surfaces and also demonstrates good adhesion to a variety of materials such as polyethylene, paper, and lead film. This makes it widely used in the ink, coating, and adhesive industries.
Physicochemical properties
Chlorinated polypropylene exhibits excellent hardness, wear resistance, saltwater resistance, and aging resistance. These properties enable it to maintain stable performance in a variety of environments and make it suitable for numerous industrial applications.
Application fields
Inks and Coatings: Chlorinated polypropylene serves as a key raw material in composite inks for printing, particularly widely used in inks for laminated materials such as double-layer PP films, PP films-paper composites, and PP films-aluminum composites. Additionally, it is employed as a pigment carrier and water-repellent agent in coatings.
Adhesive: Due to its excellent adhesion properties, chlorinated polypropylene is widely used as an adhesive for plastics and metals, particularly in the packaging industry for producing adhesives used in composite materials such as double-layer PP films, PP films-paper composites, and PP films-aluminum composites.
Flame retardant: Due to the presence of chlorine atoms on its molecular chain, chlorinated polypropylene is also partially used as a flame retardant.
Other applications: It is also widely used in fields such as primers for automotive plastic substrates (e.g., bumpers, interior trim parts, wheel covers), adhesives for film inks, adhesives for plastic molded containers and food packaging films, as well as primers for construction, paints, and coatings.
