What is chlorinated paraffin? What are its uses?

Chlorinated paraffin is a viscous liquid that is golden yellow or amber in color. It is non-flammable, non-explosive, and highly volatile. It is soluble in most organic solvents but insoluble in water and ethanol. When heated above 120°C, it slowly decomposes, releasing hydrogen chloride gas. The decomposition is accelerated by metal oxides such as iron and zinc. Chlorinated paraffin serves as an auxiliary plasticizer for polyvinyl chloride.

Chlorinated paraffin is a viscous liquid with a golden-yellow or amber color. It is non-flammable, non-explosive, and highly volatile. It is soluble in most organic solvents but insoluble in water and ethanol. When heated above 120°C, it slowly decomposes, releasing hydrogen chloride gas. Metal oxides such as iron and zinc can accelerate its decomposition. Chlorinated paraffin serves as an auxiliary plasticizer for polyvinyl chloride. It has low volatility, is non-flammable, and odorless. By replacing part of the primary plasticizer, this product can reduce production costs and lower flammability. It is primarily used in PVC cable materials, water pipes, flooring materials, films, and artificial leather, among other applications.

Chlorinated paraffin has a lower plasticizing effect than that of primary plasticizers, but it can enhance electrical edge properties and fire resistance, as well as improve tensile strength. Its drawbacks include poor aging resistance and low resistance to low temperatures, along with poor performance in secondary recycling and reutilization. It also exhibits high viscosity. Nevertheless, given the current shortage and high prices of primary plasticizers, chlorinated paraffin still maintains a certain presence in the market.

Chlorinated paraffins can be mixed with related ester substances, and the resulting mixture can serve as a plasticizer. In addition, they possess certain flame-retardant and lubricating properties, and—when necessary—can also provide some anti-corrosion effects.

The production capacity of chlorinated paraffins is very large, and the application process mainly relies on thermal chlorination and catalytic chlorination. Under special circumstances, photochlorination will be employed.

Use

1. Chlorinated paraffins are insoluble in water, making them suitable as filler materials in coatings to reduce costs, enhance cost-effectiveness, and improve waterproof and fire-retardant properties.

2. Used in PVC products, plasticizers, or plasticizing agents.

3. It can also be used as an additive in rubber, paints, and cutting oils, playing a role in fire prevention, fire resistance, and improving cutting accuracy.

4. It can also be used as an anti-coagulant and anti-extrusion agent in lubricating oils.

5. Used in paints, chlorinated rubber, and styrene-butadiene resin coatings; in plastics, it serves as a flame retardant, adhesive, cement additive, and filler.

6. It can also be used as a lubricating additive and possesses moisture resistance and chemical resistance.

7. Used as a plasticizer for adhesives and sealants such as chloroprene rubber, nitrile rubber, and SBS; chlorinated paraffin-plasticized silanized polyurethane sealants exhibit high elongation at break and excellent elasticity.
